literacy
What did I get from the readings in terms of thinking about reading and literacy?First of all I need to say that literacy text is full of information that a prospective teacher should know in detail. Literacy is a science and it has very significant effects on nations’ lives. The first article which is about books with picture is really helpful for teacher especially for early childhood teachers as me. Children can easily lose their focus while reading. They are growing up in an environment that supplies every need. They are always looking for more. To create an environment which is attractive for children is really difficult job. However by the help of picture book, this job is easier. The word and meaning correlation can be shown by picture books. In addition, especially kindergarten students are too young to understand entire meaning of some words but to show the meaning with the help of pictures make them understand better. I think that visualization is always help to teach something. With visual images some children may surprise with every different pages and it encourages teachers to work efficiently more. From my point of view books with picture is crucial achievement about literacy. Even as a big children, we enjoy to reads books with picture. What are some of the key issues that stick out to me?I learnt that literacy is a real science which has big effects on nation’s lives. When we go through the history of literacy we can understand this better. Education is one of the most important subjects for people’s life quality. We need to teach, we need to be responsible for next generations with providing necessary knowledge for them. I also think that we are in very well conditions, everything is ready for us; books, magazines, internet, archives. We are so lucky and we have also additional responsibility by having these opportunities. What am I wondering most about?I am wondering about the last text which is about open court. First of all I want to indicate that the interaction between teacher and students is crucially important for the quality of education. Without this interaction, education in school means nothing to me. You can prepare a script for children and give the education at home or in a laboratory or anywhere else. Why are we collecting children in the school? I am really upset about this issue. How can somebody bother teachers who really want to be helpful for children? Open court is a system that may negatively affect education facility in a long term process. And this system is in contrast with the real aim of education facility itself. Another issue of the text is discrimination. The school that has higher income level –students white and upper economic class members- have flexibility about this program. But in lower economic stage districts there are enforcements. Where is NCLB Act? Silence of teachers may cause illiterate future generations.

FYI

A few things to follow up on from tonight:
  1. The case study guidelines are posted to the wiki under a link on the main page. Follow these in doing each of your sections of this project. Once you turn in part I, for example, I give you feedback before you turn the whole thing in together, so if you're worried about how you're doing, you will get feedback before you get a grade so no worries.
  2. I will continue updating the blogroll on the right on this, and adding you as authors over the next couple of days, so give it a little bit. I should have both of those things done by the end of the day on Friday.
  3. Always feel free to post questions on here, once you have been added as an author or contributor, as well as to email me with any questions you have.

Don't worry too much ... the payoff is worth the struggle

I wanted to post here to see if you found it, and to let you know (yes, you, the one reading this) that you're doing fine. So many of you emailed me to say that you're worried or unsure -- how are you going to survive this class, you know nothing about blogs, but you like the idea of a hybrid course and I am here to say...

Take a deep breath, even the many of you who are taking more than one summer course. (And promise yourself next time to take summer classes one at a time if you can, so you don't go nuts). You will get through this, and I will get through this, and things that aren't working, we'll fix. Remember, the goal is to leave after six weeks knowing more about reading than you do now, and to do the very best you can in learning it.

That's all.

Keep breathing.

Here you are...

Welcome to the "Motherblog" for the READ500 class, summer of 2007. On this blog, group leaders will post synopses of students' blogs each week to keep us up to date on each other's thoughts and experiences over the span of the course. On the right, in the "blogroll" list, you will find links to each other's blogs so you can read and comment directly on them. Feel free, too, to post questions and comments to the "Motherblog" even when not assigned, if you come across a question or link that you want others to think about in the class.
